Have fun! I'm an ex-racer who skis aggressively. My style is probably fairly timid for someone doing these runs all day long in the first place. Of course it comes down to personal pref/actual feel on the skis but I'm just trying to avoid wishing they were actually a bit longer/shorter once I get them. Thanks. 2021 Atomic Bent Chetler Junior Skis w/ Salomon N L7 Bindings | AA0028224K. I would say I ski 60/40 groomers to off-piste with an uphill dawn patrol trip 1 -2 times a week. On your list, I like the sounds of the QST 99, especially for it's on-trail capabilities. (I have to mount my BC 100 but afraid may be to soft? SE. One of them is the Nordica Enforcer 88, which is stiffer and more responsive than the 93, and is a fantastic all-mountain performer. Check the charts below to see which size you need. If you need to find your BSL, but would still like to submit your order, please enter "I will provide" in the Sole Length box and we will hold your order for mounting. By thinning the vertical sidewall into more of a capped shape in the tips and tails, the skis are easy to pivot and get from edge to edge, even in tighter and trickier spots. I think you'd find the QST a lot of fun, but maybe limiting, especially given what you've been on for five years. The Enforcer 93 uses pretty thin sheets of metal, which reduces weight and softens up the flex a little. All in all, the build and shape lead to a fun-loving and fantastic overall attitude for the Holyshred. Skiers both young and old. More weight means the skis will feel softer, and shorter. This is all good stuff for pure and versatile all-mountain skiing, and were loving the energy and attitude from the new Maverick 100 Ti. The Ranger 98 Ti falls in between those to, although in my opinion it's a little closer to the M5. Good Day everyone! The Enforcer is a stiff, directional, freeride ski. I'd say the 181 is the right size in that ski for you. I'd look to those and see if something strikes you! Required fields are marked *. Supremely versatile and well-rounded, the Ranger 102 FR is great for everything from floating to carving with park stuff in between. For bindings, you shouldn't have any trouble with the Griffon. The Ranger 102 is a little more soft snow focused, while the Enforcer 100 performs a little better on firm snow. I ski 50/50 east/west and generally stay within the resort. Thanks again! Hi SE, Playfulness abounds in the QST 98, and it does have a lot of soft-snow benefits to it, as one of the better floaters of the group, allowing skiers to maximize the potential and capabilities of the ski no matter what the conditions or terrain. This narrower brethren is built for a bit more all-mountain skiing, but still has the long tip rocker profile of the 108, making this 100 a very smooth competitor in fresh and soft snow. I was skiing a few years old Liberty Origin 106 176 cm which I like but wanted something that ripped groomers better without all the tip chatter but was also good in bumps, trees and something I could tour in. Weve had these in over two feet of fresh snow, and frankly, they do just fine. Have fun! Those were both near the top of my list, along with possibly the Kore. Rossignol uses their damp tech rubber inserts in the tips and tails in order to quiet the skis down, and then to add a measure of power and grip, their titanal beam exists underfoot to give good edge grip as well as stability at speed. I found the Enforcer the "funnest" of the three with the best mix of performance but was looking for something with similar stability but more soft snow performance and slashy/pivotable in steep/deepish west coast powder. Any longer, and youd likely just be along for the ride. Love to hit the powder and the trees and cruise hard with my kid BUT still getting lessons when I can and trying to improve and eventually want to ski like I board - fluid, 2nd nature, playful, pop off stuff, go pretty hard, some carving, very little park. The Enforcer 100 has so much metal in it to that the 186 will be plenty damp and stable for your build. The Kastle MX 99 is stiff, powerful, and holds an edge better than just about anything in the 100 mm category. Enforcer 104 the heaviest of the group but decent tail rocker and nice flex that's money for bumps and trees. If youre looking for more flotation, the RP shaping versions of these skis are better choices, but for a more business-like personality, these Pagoda Piste 100 C2s have a whole lot to offer. Also check out Volkl 90Eight and Nordica Enforcer 100. Who it's For: You like the feel of a ski with metal laminates, but you want more maneuverability and forgiveness in soft snow conditions. Elan Ripstick 96 2. Advanced and Expert skiers who are looking for power, dampness, and stability. Doh! I am 62 about 5'7' at 210#. Rossignol's Carbon Alloy Matrix does give the ski an impressive level of torsional stiffness, but because the effective edge is relatively short when you're on firm snow it's not going to hold an edge quite as well as some of the other skis we've looked at in this comparison. Do you have a suggestion, including length for my size and weight? This guide is for Alpine Skis. Thanks for the response! I'm definitely more of an aggressive skier (want a confidence inspiring ski when testing the speed limit), but also want something versatile and playful to hop and jump around on, as I'm always looking for natural features to hit. The two skis Ive narrowed it down to are the Enforcer 100 in 185 and Mantra M5 in 177. HI David! The skis on your list are very high-performance, and will certainly fit your personal skiing needs, they'll just be on the heavy side for kid skiing. This is not a bad thing, and when you get to the underfoot region as well as the tail, it becomes apparent that the M-Pro likes to finish a turn in a very strong manner. For that dual-coast one-ski quiver, the 95-100 underfoot range is pretty awesome. HI Matty! That said, the shape of the Tracer 98 leans more toward soft snow performance and maneuverability than edge grip. Well, maybe not, but you get my point. However, if you are looking for a charging ski that has no limitations, you would be very happy with either! the Atomic lineup is dialed these days. For my curiosity, where would the Head Kore 93, presumably in 188, come in? Like I mentioned above I am skiing 176 cm ski but am wondering if that might be too long or if it is just the ski I am on currently. Sitting just above the narrowest ski in the series, the Bent 90 is Atomic's take on an all-mountain park ski. The other thing that stands out with the Stance 102 is the fact that it has fairly dramatic tip and tail rocker. For the weight, though, were impressed with the stability and energy out of the ski, as Heads use of carbon is pretty effective in generating an impressive strength to weight ratio. If you're looking for a quick turner with a soft-snow personality, the Sky 7 is a great choice. Hi Pete! Im currently on the Brahma- I believe its the 2015 and I do like it but thinking of getting a new setup- maybe slightly wider. The shape and construction combined give the MX 99 an exceptionally strong, precise feel. Montana in December, Colorado in February, and a few trips to Mammoth and Tahoe throughout the year. I felt like an Olympian (again in comparison) out there in the moguls, trees, and turns in general. Free shipping. I've been skiing a totally different ski, Cochise, there awesome if I'm on my A game and want to rip but I'm getting older find them a bear anymore. Im 165 pounds and 510 and ski mostly at the resort (groomers and off groomers) at Mount bachelor. It was soft snow but not powder and definitely not hard east coast stuff either. thanks I'm 5'9" 150lbs, most of my skiing is in the East, Tremblant, Stowe, Sugar Bush, Holiday Valley and the mini hills near Toronto when the kids are in ski school. Create an account to follow your favorite communities and start taking part in conversations. Around the 100mm mark. Atomic Bent 110. Built with a blend of aspen and ash in the wood core and two sheets of pre-preg carbon in the construction, these skis have an amazing blend of stiffness and light weight to appease the hardest-charging skiers out there. Regarding the QST 92, do you recommend the 177 cm or the 185 cm length? Versus the other skis on your list, the QST's don't have metal in them (except underfoot for binding retention), so they're a lot better for skiers who fit your description and application. For length, I would think the 174 cm would perform well for you. Have fun! I've been devouring your videos and ski tests since I discovered them while shopping for new skis; you provide a fantastic resource for those of us who don't have the opportunity to demo everything! What Skis Should I Buy: Comparing Men's 100mm All Mountain Skis - 2019 Edition. Proving once again that a good ski is a good ski. I liked to dart into the trees and find some fresh powder on the backside when I can. Still have questions? I found the M5, precise and easy to bend into shorter carving turns but lacking float due to the shallower rocker profiles. Not a particularly strong skier technically but decent. After a long time snowboarding. Think I could use a little more direction as I havent bought a pair of new skis in 15 years and Im still trying to wrap my head around all of the new technology. You give up a little bit of precision on firm snow, but you gain some maneuverability in soft snow and in un-groomed terrain. The Invictus is a great choice, it's a pretty hefty ski if you thought the Mantra was a bit soft in the tips. Youre not scared of having a bit of power underfoot, especially in something this wide. I've got a question where I'm not sure whether it's time for new skis this season. Certainly quicker than the Enforcer, the Ripstick makes a strong turn as well. Two of my favorite skis from last year. Definitely the best in powder out of the skis you're considering, and super fun in moguls and trees too. The new 98 is a way better floater than the 92 that you have--more deep taper and extended rocker in that ski makes a big difference. Myself? Thanks! The result is a "boost" in the ski's power and stability, but the overall feel of the QST 99 stays more or less the same. I'd recommend meeting somewhere in the middle with something like the Blizzard Rustler 9, Head Kore 93, or Salomon QST 92. I'm aggressive on-piste and more moderate off-piste, especially in narrower chutes and trees. Thank you for the comment! The rule of thumb for skate poles is that they should come between your lip and your nose. Scott, Hi Tom! Too short, and you'll find your forearm angled downward. I'm in my 50s and 6'1 205, consider myself advanced intermediate skiier. While this isnt a free pass to say screw all that, I know I need 210s!, it is an official recognition that different skiers have different preferences which can easily change the length of ski they purchase. The Rangers (98 better on-trail, 102 more freeride) both have partial metal while the Kastle is built more like your Bonafide. These skis have a great combination of construction, with a build made from maple, aspen, and a Titanal Y-Beam metal laminate, these skis excel on the groomers, and specifically in a carved turn. Im looking for something a little better for off piste, powder and tight tree runs. With a bit of extra length, the skis will have a more accurate flex and better weight distribution. As one of the burlier skis on this end of the spectrum, the Declivity 102 Ti has a wide range of applications and abilities that will appeal to a broad group of skiers. Beginner skiers are classified as people who have never ever skied, right up to those just starting to dabble in Intermediate trails. The Mantra M5, Rossignol Experience 94, Salomon QST 92 or the Blizzard Rustler 9 should be at the top of your list. Have you seen that too? While we wouldnt peg the 102 as one of the better floaters of this category, its certainly got its fair share of tip rocker to help with the float, and the 140 mm shovel width doesnt hurt either. It uses a wood core made from silver fir and beech, sandwiched between two full sheets of titanal metal, and finished with carbon and fiberglass. I have been eyeing the Blizzard Rustlers (both the 10s and the 9s) as well as the Kores, but am wondering if I should go for a more flexible ski? Appreciate the feedback! Like to rip through the trees, love the steep and deep and am enjoying the bumps more and more all the time. I'd also put the Enforcer (probably 93, but you're on the 100 thread) on the list as more of a freeride choice with a sandwich sidewall construction and two full sheets of metal. All over when it comes to terrain - bowls, trees, bumps from time to time, and on groomers just depends on the day between tighter turns and super g turns. I need to detune the tips and tail a bit on the BC. I'd go with the Enforcer 100 in the 184 or the Ranger 102 in the 184. It uses a wood core made from silver fir and beech, sandwiched between two full sheets of titanal metal, and finished with carbon and fiberglass. Atomic Bent Chetler 100s vs. Salomon QST 99 I'm on the search for some all mountain skis to fill the void of not skiing during the summer months. I'd say the Sky is the best floater of the three, but doesn't quite have the stability of the Salomon. I typically, however, recommend it for lighter weight skier more than skiers your size. Hi Cody! Its not as rockered in the tail as some of the other skis on this list, and that adds to the strong finish of the arc. Im a level 2 IASI ski instructor aged 22 weighing 90kg. However, I feel like that would have been a better ski for me in my 20s and 30s, but at nearly 50 years I found it pretty tiring at the end of the day due to the weight and not as quick as I'd like (or I'm no longer as quick as I'd like!). Thanks for your help! thanks! I love the Soul Rider as an all-mountain ski. I'd go 92 unless you want something a bit burlier and wider. So will likely go with the QST99. Thinking 100 under foot but maybe thats the problem. Here goes! 28.5). What you will find, however, is exciting news on the boot . I have been skiing on K2 Amp Phantom 160's since about 2013. 3D Radius Sidecut applies to this 102, and allows for a great variety of turn shapes and styles, even with a ski that has dual-metal laminate. Furthermore, would the only downside of the enforcers - for my type of use - be the weight or do they also perform less well off piste? The good news is that the all around quality of skis is increasing, making it more possible than ever to find a ski that fits your specific style and preferences. Any help is much appreciated. We usually pair skis of this caliber with either the Marker Griffon 13 or the Tyrolia Attack 13--both have strong performance. With minimal rocker and taper to the ski, it does hook up easily, but if youre looking to glean the best response from it, you are going to need to put in your own effort as well. The mondo point size is the generic boot size that every boot maker uses it. SE. Softest ski on the wall, and by a pretty good margin, the Line Blend is a tricksters paradise. Nordica Enforcer 100, Fischer Ranger 102 FR, Blizzard Rustler 10. But felt they were a bit too heavy and burly for me. And in terms of sizing, your range sounds good, probably look to the high-170's if you can. This is what used to be referred to as Expert until rocker skis came along and let experts go back to over head ski lengths. When hand-flexing the ski, its noticeably stiffer in the tip versus the tail, but thats not to say the tail is soft by any means. With a fair amount of camber underfoot, the Maverick 100 is energetic and snappy, and thanks to the new Omatic Core construction, the skis are light in the swingweight as well. I'd say the Experience and Rustler are a bit more user-friendly while the Mantra has a leg up in terms of carving and edge grip. Their AirTec core sheds even more weight by removing strips of material, which is then supported by a titanium laminate. I think you'll be pretty stoked either way. SE. Rather fit for a fat old man. I think the biggest issue I have with the MSP 99s is that they are just not forgiving if you get in the backseat at all in the trees or bumps. Edge hold on less the ideal New England days? I demo'd them again this year with the new M5. You folks offer an impeccable and generous service. Also check out the K2 Pinnacle 95 and the Blizzard Rustler 9 for comparison. For next year, I'll be skiing almost entirely in the west (going to try to hit all of the Mountain Collective in North America), though I don't have the luxury of timing my ski days around fresh snow, so I'll be skiing the mountains as they are. I'm having fun on them. Chairlift Chat is the official blog of Skiessentials.com. I'm 5'10 and 150lbs, age 30 and a reasonably advance and aggressive skier, mostly in CO. The Enforcer was smooth and quick edge to edge with decent float but not super stable at high speeds and the Kore 105 was fun with good float although lacking true carving ability on firm snow and was easily deflected in chop. Who's making that argument, you might ask? For example, East Coast skiers may have visions of skiing wide open powder fields, but the reality is that 9/10 theyll have to navigate tight trees before finding their 100 yard straight shot of glory. If you loved the feel of the QST 106, but want to go a little narrower, I'd go with the QST 99. They check all your boxes in terms of groomer, fun, bumps, light weight, and manageable. As a result, I'm researching fatter skis, around the 100 cm width, that I can grow into as my ability increases; and even help be a better skier. I'm looking for an all-mountain ski in the 100mm waist range. Because it's lighter, it's going to be easier to maneuver compared to some of the heavier skis in this article. The boat-hull inspired shape in the tip and tail boost the ski's float and overall performance in deeper snow conditions. Please help. If you're looking to blend light weight and performance, I'd take a strong look at the Elan Ripstick 96, or 106, if you're looking for wider. The Rustler 10 has metal underfoot that tapers towards the tip and tail of the ski, so it feels more stout underfoot, but since you don't ski terribly fast, you might not need that metal. . The boot sole length is the literal length from toe to heel of that boot, measured in millimeters. Since you're 60% groomers, I'd recommend staying closer to 90-95 than 100 if you can. Buy the skis for the conditions you do ski versus the conditions you want to ski. You would be totally fine with the 186 Enforcer 100. They just also have that low gear that you need for skiing with kids. Still will do both tho. If you're worried about that, you could consider going with the 188 cm length. Besides a ski that will do well for lift service and also back country, would love a ski that would do a bit better in powder than the current 80ish underfoot I currently have and also allow me to play in the park on small (the smallest) features and ski backwards. Most intermediate skiers will be tempted to wander off trail, but may not be brave enough quite yet. Height: 5'10" The M5 Mantra is a great ski. That said, you might not get the same "playful" feeling from the E100 in the softer snow, so it's a bit of a tradeoff. SE. Pumped to have found your site/reviews. Between those, the Mantra has more of a metallic feel while the Bonafide is more woody. Not a twin tip in the park world, but with freestyle influence, the Camox is a chameleon of a skihappy anywhere theres snow. For help with Nordic Ski sizing, please call us at: (877) 812-6710. Imperfections in the snow surface won't affect the performance of the Rustler 10 as much as a ski with stiffer tips and tails. I read a lot of your reviews to help me understand more about the differences, so thank you for that! During the storm cycle around Christmas 2021, I skied a lot of fairly deep powder on the front sides and the QSTs didn't perform as well as I would like. 2022 . Awesome, thanks for the feedback. My friend who got me into skiing (my favorite activity now) didnt help me at all and said buy what you think looks cool, which I have come to realize was terrible advise. The shape of the tail in particular is quite a bit different. I am super-impressed with the versatility of that ski from moguls to trees and groomers and powder. I ski mostly Mont-Tremblant in Quebec. Any help would be great. Instead of fitting the ski by height, the skis that we carry are fit by weight. Thanks! The ski's construction consists of bamboo, poplar, and carbon, which gives the Origin 96 one of the more explosive, energetic flex patterns out of the skis in this article. or Best Offer. My buddy's kids all have the BC's (aged 12-20 and expert) and love them. Psyched you're already back on snow! Due to it having two sheets of metal, the Enforcer would be a big change from the Sky 7's. Another surprisingly stiff ski, this one more in the tail versus the shovel, so kind of an opposite to the Fischer above. The M5 is a bit softer than the Bonafide, and with a new type of construction with the Titanal Frame, you get a precise edge feel with a more playful overall character. Preference: Finally, theres preference. It comes in a 187, and I don't think you'll overski it like the Pinnacle. SE, Have you guys skied on or reviewed the 2019 Line Sick Day 104? I like to ski the whole mountain - I enjoy carving the groomers, but spend most of my time exploring off piste. It's not the most demanding ski, but it's also not the easiest. The metal also gives this ski a strong and confident feeling in a high-speed carved turn no matter what the snow conditions may be. Best Use: Downhill Skiing. Josh, Love the reviews guys and your youtube vids! I just got back into skiing last year. Myself? I've currently got a pair of Blizzard Magnums (I think low 80s underfoot) which I love for the groomers, however, I am finding myself sometimes spending the entire day off-piste in the trees. It's not the easiest, most forgiving ski in soft snow, but considering the amount of precision and power you get on firm snow, it performs in soft snow quite well. It crosses over between different terrain and snow conditions very well, and is a more forgiving ski than those with lots of metal and less rocker, but don't forget about that metal. I'm 5' 7'', 175 lbs, mostly ski in Tahoe. Built with a light wood core and Stocklis Titec Pro metal topsheet, these things are true Stocklis--worthy of the praise and price for dedicated all-mountain skiers. 172's with the marker bindings. I'm 180 pounds, 5'9", 60 years old, ski mostly soft snow all over the mountain in Colorado and New Mexico at an advanced intermediate or low advanced level of competency on Salomon QST 92 169 cm skis about 20 days a season. Please let me know your thoughts. They have a shorter turn radius and lighter tips and tails. Was: $975.00. It's somewhat like the Nordica Enforcer 100 in the sense that its construction provides the stability and torsional stiffness, while the shape gives it a more maneuverable feel than lots of the skis in this comparison. It uses some of the longest rocker in this comparison article, especially in the tip. Out West, where things are a bit more open, its not uncommon to see skiers on skis much taller than themselves. I liked them. The rule of thumb for skate poles is that they should come between your lip and your nose. Getting down to the final few candidates but curious on your advice to make a final decision. HI Mitchell! Have fun! For a stiffer ~100 mm fun-loving ski, I'd also check out the Nordica Unleased 98 and the Rossignol Blackops 98. I have a connection that can get me any Armada ski at a discount, but wondering whether something like the Rustler 10s would be a better ski for me than the Tracer 98s? I ski approx. I'd like a pair of skis that will let me fully appreciate the west coast snow, and let me further my skills in ungroomed areas. They manage to eke out quite a bit of flotation and freeride acumen, however, and a lot of it comes down to the skis ability to flex and bend with a wide range of stiffness and power. I also like to ski in switch and do some 180s and 360s and some silly stuff like butters occasionally(not looking for an insane twin tip or super wide ski that will give me an hard time at the cabin lifts). Felt a little chatter on the hard pack at times but they were better than i thought they would be on fast groomers. I mostly stay on the groomers but do a little of piste and like to carve it up. Deep Dive: Atomic Bent Chetler 100. Looking for something that floats well, turns easily, stability, good in woods. Hi Oliver! Hope that helps! We cannot guarantee mounting if your BSL is provided after the original order is placed. Have fun! The Atomic Bent Chetler 100 Skis have consistently turned curious skiers into die hard fans with a winning combination of nimble, playful performance, and easygoing all mountain capability. I don't want some chattery noodles when going fast but I also don't want lifeless sticks that will leave something to be desired for off-piste runs. Jokes aside, you'll be blown away by the performance of skis since the last time you were on two planks. I demoed both this year but on separate trips so I didnt get the side by side comparison I wanted. For the best experience on our site, be sure to turn on Javascript in your browser. Tried some Kore 99's the next day, much better ski for me in the chop but not as agile in tight spots as I might like. A versatile one-ski quiver on the wider end, the Armada Declivity 102 shouldnt be overlooked on any advanced or expert skiers list. That shape does lead to a shorter-than-most turn radius, and it makes the ski snappy and agilecontributing to a higher level of fun and play out there on the hill. Tom. Im also looking for something a little less demanding than the RTM 84 - I love the ski, but it can be unforgiving. Let me know what you think!
